Meet David,
age 24

"The water doesn't care about my diagnosis. It just cares how fast I move through it."

David drove 35 minutes each way for three years before he touched the podium. This spring he set a personal best of 3 minutes 12 seconds in the 200m freestyle — a time his coach wrote on the whiteboard and circled twice. His mother said she heard the bleachers before she saw him finish.

Meet Priya,
age 17

"When the gun fires, everything goes quiet except my feet."

Priya started with Torch at age 12, too shy to look the starting official in the eye. Last October she crossed the finish line first in her division at the Regional Games and immediately turned to find her dad in the stands. She found him on his feet, like the whole bleacher section.

Meet Marcus,
age 31

"Bocce taught me patience. Winning taught me I had it all along."

Marcus joined Torch after his occupational therapist mentioned it in passing. He showed up to his first bocce tournament in a polo shirt and left with a gold ribbon and three new friends. He now volunteers at the registration table on mornings when he isn't competing — sometimes both.
